Despite your car preferences, we all have to agree that the Mazda MX-5 is a classic that never ceases to please. First produced in the 90s, the MX-5 took the world by storm, as a lightweight two-seat roadster that above all, was affordable to the average Jo. What the original car lacked in power, it made up for in nimble handling, mechanical simplicity, and a cute smile that matched the driver’s. Nowadays you can pick up these classics for what I consider to be a bargain, as the original MX-5 is one of the cheapest ‘dollar per smiles’ you can buy! However if you’re after something made in this century, with the creature comforts and technology we’ve become accustomed to, then I’m glad to tell you that the all-new MX-5 has been revealed.
With either a 1.5 litre or 2.0 litre 4-cylinder motor, the new MX-5 has stuck to its roots and kept a smaller engine over placing a larger, more powerful engine. Think what you may, but it is refreshing to see that the thinkers over at Mazda have stood their ground despite critics over the past few decades consistently complaining about a lack of power. That’s simply not what the Mx-5 is about. If you want to get from A to B quickly, the MX-5 isn’t the car for you, but if the trip is more about the journey and experience than the destination, the MX-5 makes a fantastic candidate. The new MX-5 is by no means particularly slow, with a 0-100 time around 7 seconds (official times unreleased). In placing itself in this speed range, it serves a good balance for everyday driving as well as for those stunning Sunday mornings that enthusiasts live for.
The styling on this car is spot on. The exterior looks like a mix between a Jaguar F-Type at the rear and the Toyota 86 at the front, which are both stunning cars in their own right. Mazda has created an appearance that isn’t very Mazda like at all, with a rather premium look about the car. If the badge was taken off and you were shown this car for the first time, it’d be fair to guess that a company of more prestige, such as Lexus or BMW, made this fantastic machine. The quality feel of the car continues inside, with an ergonomic cockpit where the use of cheap plastics appears absent. In a way the MX-5 cockpit embraces aesthetic aspects of the BMW Z4, with the i-drive type computer display control, the digital screen protruding above the centre dash, and the concave steering wheel. The knobs and buttons are fashionably accentuated with metallic style materials, and are spaced in a way that avoids clutter. Keeping to the sleek and sharp tone, a sporty steering wheel sits there inviting the driver to grab hold and go for a spin. With a cockpit as well set out as this it’d almost be easy to forget to drive the thing, but rather sit there gazing at all the subtle intricacies.
A list of awesome optional extras is also available for the little roadster. One of these is the 9 speaker 203 watt Bose sound system available, although I’m not too sure why you would need a wicked sound system with an exhaust as sublime as this. A Brembo performance upgrade is also available (although possibly not in the Australian market), which gives you bigger rims, wider tyres, and red callipers, which seriously elevate the MX-5 to another level of flair.
Mazda had done it yet again. They’ve produced a modern, stylish, fun, nimble, and relatively practical car that above all, won’t break the bank. If you’re in the market to find a new sports car but on a budget, you’d be hard pressed to walk past the MX-5, in fact its difficult to think of any other car that you can buy brand new at a similar price which would put as big a smile on your face. In addition to this, previous MX-5 generations have proved to have an incredibly large range of aftermarket products, which means that the potential for MX-5 owners to modify their rides to their ideas of ‘perfection’ is almost limitless. There is no doubt in my mind that this will be the case for this generation of MX-5 as well!
