As silly as the question may initially sound, it is a very good question indeed. Obviously, the answer is to go for a drive, but the real question, is where? Chances are, if you’ve upgraded your car, suburban streets with speed limits of 60 are not only lacking in excitement, but are also places of danger for both pedestrians and drivers who want to test out their ride’s new tech. I wouldn’t hesitate to bet that you’re either looking for something with long swooping bends, hairpins, and a speed limit that lets you get to at least 4th gear, or you’re looking for something relatively engaging, but with a more relaxed vibe. And so I present to you, in no particular order, 3 of the best driving roads in Victoria.
- The Black Spur
Located between Marysville and the Yarra Ranges, this is probably the best drive you can get, and it’s relatively close to home. Featuring 30km of tarmac, winding between lush, fresh forest, and a reasonable speed limit of 80 throughout, the Black Spur presents a strong case for one of the finest motoring experiences you can have close to Melbourne. This road provides immaculate bends, both long and swooping, and small and sharp, all laid down on an amazingly smooth bit of tarmac.
- The Great Ocean Road
An absolute classic, you can’t go past it. Despite the fact that it may lack the sheer speed and adrenaline of a windy mountain drive, you’ll find that it well and truly makes up for it in the beauty and serenity it provides. With 243km of road laced across beachfronts, snippets of rainforests, and cliffs, you’re eyes are never short on incredible scenery to feast upon. And with fantastic tourist destinations scattered along the drive, there’ll be plenty to see and do if you want to stretch your legs out a bit.
- Lake Mountain Road
This is a road so sublime, the boys from Top Gear reckon it is the number one item on the list for best driving road, not only for Victoria, but for all of Australia. That is a big call, but the only way to discover the truth behind the claim is to experience it yourself! This road epitomises the best characteristics of both roads mentioned in this article, with stunning mountainous scenery acting as the perfect backdrop to a road which gets those driving nerves tingling.
