Lotus has forever been a brand renowned for producing exceptional lightweight sports cars in their purist form. Often times, this lightweight performance is achieved through a minimalistic approach defined by a lack of interior luxuries, such as radio, GPS, air con, airbags, and leather seats. While some can’t do without these ‘essentials’, especially in cars that demand a relatively steep price tag, others look past this bareback approach and admire the driving purity that is achieved. Whilst some manufacturers make road cars and then tune them to be like racecars, Lotus create racecars and make them street legal, and the results have almost always been phenominal.
With the release of the Lotus Elise 220 Cup, this tradition continues. Weighing in at a meager 943kg, this lightweight pocket rocket certainly hasn’t succumbed to the seduction of the installation of modern technology. The barebones mentality, combined with the 1.8 litre supercharged four-cylinder 162kW engine, allow the 220 to achieve a 0-100km/h time faster than that of the standard Elise S, which hits 100 in 4.6 seconds.
On the road, the crisp handling is achieved through Lotus’s EDL (Electronic Differential Lock), close-ratio six speed manual transmission, and an aerodynamic package that produces up to 125kg of downforce (which is a lot, especially considering that the car weighs in under a tonne). One of the most shocking stats, although not surprising, is that the Lotus achieves 7.5l/100km, which is extraordinary stuff for a car with such strong sporting character.
If you want a car that can hit 100km/h in under 5 seconds, or you’ve got a Lotus and want to add some extra kit to you, then you’d be glad to know that here at Active Motorwerke Australia, we offer a wide variety of performance and aesthetic upgrades to give your car the performance edge!
