Back in the 70s we were lucky enough to witness the release of a fantastic machine that was 100% poster material. The original, despite being a serious car, looked as if Hot Wheels had designed it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Affectionately named ‘the Batmobile’ due to the comic like shape, BMW’s 3.0 CSL was an endurance racing legend, and quickly proved itself to be a fierce competitor. The flared arches, road-biting lip and almost ridiculous rear wing all formed what will prove to be a classic and iconic shape. And now, in an effort to pay homage to the machine, BMW have created this.
Unfortunately the car pictured above is a concept, and who knows if it will ever be built, but we’d be in for a treat if it is. Immediately you can see hints of the old implemented into a car that also displays some features similar to those of BMW’s most recent vehicles. Adrian Van Hooydonk, BMW’s group design boss says “Our homage cars not only demonstrate how proud we are of our heritage, but also how important the least can be in determining our future”.
It seems that BMW have let their designers go nuts with this one. You’ll notice the headlights beam their light through X shaped patterns, and the kidney grill is massive, compared to normal cars from the manufacturer. The back features an absolutely stunning light setup, with swooping curves producing a red glow around the wing and flared arches. It is a work of art if you ask me.
Inside the cabin, BMW have stuck to much of what the original was known for, with a minimalist styled interior. The steering wheel is almost sci-fi, and looks more like something you’d find in a movie’s interpretation of a car in the year 3000. Hip-hugging racing bucket seats hint at the lightweight characteristics of the car, and so too does the apparent lack of creature comforts.
This car has so much potential, with aesthetics to sooth the soul of even the most critical car fanatics, this car is a surefire piece of art in the making. All I can say is, please BMW, please!
