Another Bavarian Beauty
The last few years have been big for BMW, with the launch of the all new M3 and M4, and now, a little late to the party, the all new BMW M2 coupe has been revealed. As the successor to the absolutely astonishing 1M coupe which had car fans speechless, even the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, the M2 has big shoes to fill, however a quick glance at the stat sheet, and then the car itself, proves mighty promising.
Powered by a twin-scroll 3.0 litre straight six churning out 465Nm of torque, and fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, the M2 sprints from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds. Swap out your heel and toe skills for a DCT automatic gearbox, and you shear 0.2 seconds off that sprint time. Although I haven’t driven the car, I can say with almost absolute certainty that if the M2 is to be anything like the 1M, then the handling will be absolutely superb.
BMW certainly hasn’t held back with the styling, with extravagant lines accentuating the side-skirts, sharp and eccentric contours dominating the front, and beautifully swollen flares comprising the wheel arches, the M2 is a piece of absolute motoring beauty. The four exhaust tips snuggled under the bulging booty provide a subtle finishing touch, much like a ring or a necklace would to a Hollywood star’s red carpet ensemble.
The interior is classic BMW, with all the gizmos and gadgets you could ask for, but all neatly placed in a logical and ergonomic format. It appears to be the kind of setting where you almost wouldn’t mind sitting in traffic, with an executive office look and feel about it. Of most importance, the steering wheel couldn’t look any more inviting, with luscious leather and stylish highlights; it looks like something you’d hang at an art gallery.
With the Australian debut expected next year, 2016 can’t approach any faster. Unfortunately I’ll likely join the crowd of onlookers who can only stare with awe as those lucky enough cruise past, but by all means, I’ll be looking forward to seeing such a machine on our shores!
