You probably wouldn’t take me seriously if I told you there was an epic new body kit available for the new MX-5 called the ‘Rocket Bunny’, but the product from Japanese tuners Aimgain is quite a stunner. Adhering to that classic Japanese wide-body racing style, the kit looks absolutely spectacular…..except for one thing.
Before I discuss the ‘blemish’ (to put it nicely), let’s look at what the package offers. Out front, you’ll quickly realise that speed bumps are out of the question, with a superb, but incredibly low front splitter. Moving on, it’s hard to not notice the massive modifications to the wheel arches, which would be large enough to fit on an SUV. This is pretty much a practical design requirement, because the cambered wheels need a significant bit of space to tuck in under. The combination of the positive camber, and the anodised red wheels looks incredible, and meets the perfect balance between modified and overly done. Now, getting to that ‘blemish’, you’ve probably noticed before I could even mention it, and that’s because it’s absolutely hideous. The thing sits there like a whopping coldsore, and doesn’t fit the part at all. I am, of course, talking about the rear ‘duck wing’. It looks like they’ve run out of parts or material in the workshop, and just used a spare bit of the leftovers and stuck it on, taken a step back, and thought ‘good enough’. Each to their own I guess, but I reckon an elevated wing would’ve been much more suitable.
Despite the one drawback, Aimgain have done a superb job, and the modified MX-5 now has some serious game.
