Half a decade ago, if I mentioned ‘A-class’, you’d likely think of the dreary, shrunken-van-like Mercedes hatchback driving 20km/h under the speed limit in the right hand lane, but nowadays, Mercedes has completely reformed the image of the A-class, and made it into something quite spectacular. Although it has been out for a while now, the Mercedes A 45 AMG is an absolutely astonishing car, and in my mind, one of the top contenders for a future classic hatchback.
Like any other hatchback, the A 45 has four wheels, a steering wheel, some doors, and a few seats, but unlike other hatchbacks, the A 45 possesses a magnificent 2.0 litre turbocharged engine with the power of 355 horses. With all this grunt in such a relatively small car, it is no wonder as to how the A 45 reaches 100km/h from standstill in just 4.6 seconds. Not all the credit can go to the engine though, as Mercedes have kitted this beast out with an incredible 7-speed sports transmission, delivering power to all four wheels, with a variety of performance options selectable within the cockpit.
And I haven’t even discussed the best bit about this car, which is the cacophony of induction and exhaust, intertwined with the incredible snarl at each gear change. The sound of this thing just makes you want to put your foot flat to the floor, just so you can listen to the rev range just one more time. Usually in these blogs I write about awesome exhaust systems that you can get as aftermarket options, well this exhaust is exactly like one of those, except completely stock. Thank you Mercedes, thank you! Give yourself the pleasure, and watch the video below. Seriously.
If I could fault the A 45 in any way, it would simply be that for a machine with such incredible performance, and a stat sheet that makes petrol-sexuals drool, the exterior styling presents itself as rather inadequate. While it is quite easy to identify this car as a serious machine from the interior, aside from the quad-exhaust, and maybe the AMG badge, the A 45 doesn’t appear as particularly vicious in appearance as it is in nature. It is because of this, that I present to you the A 45 RevoZport RZA 290 Aerokit. Through the addition of various components, such as a front splitter, a lightweight vented carbon fibre bonnet, an aggressive canard, aerodynamic side skirts, rear diffuser, quad exhaust tips, as well as a fantastic GT wing, the overall look of the car changes from a soft and subtle appearance to something predominated by sleek and sharp highlights. Have a look at the video below for a 360° view of the kit, as well as some awesome sprints.
